KATHMANDU: The Mothers’ Day is being observed by paying homage to their mothers across the country today.

Across the nation, every year on the auspicious day of Baisakh Krishna Paksha Aunshi, Mothers’ Day is observed.

This cherished tradition is marked with profound reverence and devotion, as offerings of sweets are tenderly presented to mothers.

Embedded within this festival is a classical ethos, honoring mothers with sentiments of reverence, devotion, and respect, seeking their blessings.

People get up early in the morning, take bath and worship their mothers by giving presents and goodies.

The day falls on the Matatirtha Aunsi.

The mother holds a paramount position, for she nurtures life within her womb for nine months, as highlighted in ancient texts where her importance surpasses even that of the father by a thousandfold.

Thus, the living mother is honored with heartfelt gestures, adorned with sweet offerings and fine garments.

Those who do not have their mothers go to Matatirtha in Kathmandu to pay tribute to the departed souls of their mothers.

Devotees flock to the Matatirtha pond, take a holy deep and observe the day by offering alms to the poor.

People in Bhaktapur perform rituals at Hanumanghat in memory of their departed mothers.

Likewise, those who are abroad take to social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook and telephone to remember their mom.

The scriptures extol the sanctity of motherhood and birthplace, proclaiming, ‘Janani Janmabhoomischa Swargadapi Gariyasi,’ emphasizing the unparalleled significance of the mother and her birthing ground, transcending even the heavens.
