A Legacy of Service in Education

Remembering Tej Narayan Singh

On the second anniversary of his passing, we remember Tej Narayan Singh, a dedicated leader who significantly improved education in Dhamaura, Mahottari.

His hard work and commitment brought lasting change to this rural area, inspiring students, teachers, and the community alike.

At a time when few people in Mahottari had access to higher education, Singh stood out as a graduate in the arts.

Instead of pursuing a personal career, he used his education to help his community.

Driven by a strong belief in the power of learning, he founded Janata Secondary School in Dhamaura, bringing education to a place where formal schooling was rare.

Making education accessible to all

Singh believed that every child, regardless of their background, deserved an education.

When poverty prevented many children from attending school, he encouraged parents to send their children to Janata Secondary, reminding them that education was free.

He worked tirelessly to change mindsets, gradually convincing more families of the value of learning, which led to a steady increase in student enrollment.

A dual challenge: Building and running a school

Singh took on the monumental task of not only creating a school but also securing the resources to sustain it. Leading with dedication, he managed everything from hiring teachers to ensuring they were paid.

He introduced sports competitions and other extracurricular activities, giving students opportunities to grow beyond academics and fostering a well-rounded learning experience.

His influence extended beyond Dhamaura, encouraging surrounding villages to prioritize education as well.

His leadership helped the school gain support from the local government, which provided additional resources to improve its facilities and programs.

This partnership allowed the school to grow and continue offering quality education for years to come.

A legacy of generosity

In a remarkable act of generosity, Singh donated 16 bighas (about 10.5 hectares) of his own land to the school, providing a steady income to support its operations.

Despite this significant gift, he chose not to name the school after himself, demonstrating his commitment to serving the community rather than seeking personal recognition.

Passing the torch

For nearly twenty years, Tej Narayan Singh led the school’s education committee, guiding its growth and laying a strong foundation for future leaders.

When the time came, he passed the leadership to a new generation. His dedication set an example for today’s teachers and students, who continue to feel his impact in their lives.

Inspiring generations

Singh’s life exemplifies the power of education, leadership, and selfless service.

His legacy lives on, not only through Janata Secondary School but also through his son, Dr. Om Murti Anil, who carries forward his father’s spirit of service.

Today, we remember a man who transformed education in Dhamaura, uplifting his community and shaping the lives of many.

His impact endures, serving as a lasting reminder of his dedication and the values he embodied.
