Secretariat active in realizing SAARC’s objectives



KATHMANDU: The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Secretariat announced that it has been working tirelessly with the SAARC Chair, Nepal, to strengthen the process of attaining the organization’s objectives as outlined in its Charter.

SAARC Secretary General Golam Sarwar highlighted these efforts during his recent visits to India and Pakistan, according to a press release issued by the Secretariat.

The Secretary General paid a courtesy call on Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad on May 21, 2024, and briefed him on the recent progress of SAARC activities.

During the meeting, the Secretary General emphasized the need for sincere efforts from all member states to reinvigorate the SAARC process.

On this occasion, PM Sharif expressed Pakistan’s firm commitment to strengthening SAARC and assured full support to the Secretary General in advancing the SAARC process.

He also reiterated Pakistan’s desire to host the 19th SAARC Summit at the earliest. The Secretary General’s introductory visit to Pakistan took place from May 20-25, 2024.

Similarly, the Secretary General separately met with India’s State Minister for External Affairs Rajkumar Ranjan Singh, Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra, Secretary (East) Ambassador Jaideep Mazumder, and other senior officials of the External Affairs Ministry.

He briefed them on the ongoing activities of SAARC and its future direction.

The Indian leadership and high dignitaries reiterated India’s full commitment to the SAARC process and assured full support to the Secretary General in his efforts to revitalize SAARC, according to the press release.
