Electoral laws are being revised to ensure timely update: Home Minister Lamichhane

KATHMANDU: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Home Affairs Rabi Lamichhane has stated that he is internally eager to revise political party and election management laws.

After receiving a briefing on the proposed bill related to the Election Commission on Sunday, Minister Lamichhane responded to the media, saying, “I am very confident that this will be a significant leap forward. We have deliberated on this with the aim of strengthening democracy.”

The Ministry of Home Affairs is indicating that it will present bills for major amendments to the electoral laws in Parliament.

Minister Lamichhane mentioned, “As the concerned ministry, the Ministry of Home Affairs will take these bills to the Parliament. Discussions will take place in the House on the included topics.”

He remarked that there is no reason to delay the bill.

“There is no reason to delay this bill. If there are reasons, let’s discuss them at the final stage. I will personally expedite the final discussion,” the Home Minister said.

“I am eager to accomplish this task more swiftly than ever during my tenure. There are no major hurdles in the final phase. Despite some good things being excluded, I won’t omit them. Let the sovereign parliament discuss this,” he added.

Minister Lamichhane also stated that even if there is no consensus among political parties on some issues, discussions should take place in the House.

He claimed that the bill aimed at unifying and amending the electoral laws would strengthen democracy.

Minister Lamichhane also discussed the upcoming by-elections for vacant local positions, saying, “There is some delay in the by-election of local levels. There is a proposal to hold them in Mangsir (November-December).”
