KATHMANDU: In anticipation of the upcoming National Assembly (NA) elections, the ruling partner Unified Socialist Party has scaled back its aspirations, opting to vie for only two seats.
As the deadline for nominations looms on Monday, Unified Socialist, the political faction within the coalition, has finalized its decision to pursue only 2 seats in the National Assembly.
Initially laying claim to three seats, Samajwadi faced discontent after the allocation fell short.
Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prahchanda expressed his displeasure, leading to Chairman Madhav Nepal’s departure from Baluwatar.
Jagannath Khatiwada, the party spokesperson, revealed that the decision to contest with only 2 seats was reached.
“On behalf of the party, we have entrusted three people with the responsibility of finalizing the names of the candidates,” said Khatiwada.
He added, “Discussions are also ongoing about the cluster. We are stuck because of the cluster.”
Despite lingering dissatisfaction, Khatiwada confirmed the party’s acceptance of 2 seats.
“Our dissatisfaction exists,” he acknowledged. “We will see tomorrow where it affects. It is now decided to go ahead with the nomination for tomorrow.”
Khatiwada assured that the candidate’s name would be announced by Sunday evening.
“The name will come today evening. We will announce the name once more after some discussion with the coalition parties,” he stated.
Previously, the ruling coalition parties had shared the seats, with Nepali Congress contesting 10, Maoist Center in 6, United Socialist Party in 2, and Janata Samajwadi Party in one of the 19 available positions.
