World Bank to invest for Mechinagar road construction

JHAPA: A 14-km blacktopped road will be constructed at Shahidmarga and Suryodayamarga in Mechinagar under the World Bank-supported ‘Urban Governance and Infrastructure Project’.

Member of the House of Representatives, Bishwo Prakash Sharma said that the World Bank will invest Rs 1.03 billion for the road construction which will help in the development of two important urban areas of the town, Dhulabari and Kakadbhitta.

It may be noted that the Nepal government has already made a decision to implement ‘Urban Governance and Infrastructure Project’ in 33 local government units of seven provinces.

In this connection, the World Bank had signed an agreement to provide a concessional loan of 1.5 billion US dollars (around Rs 200 billion) to the Government of Nepal.

Nepali Congress (NC) general secretary and lawmaker from Jhapa constieuncy-1 Sharma shared the World Bank has provided a loan of 7.8 million US dollars (over Rs 1 billion) for the construction of two roads in Mechinagar of Jhapa constituency number 1 under the project.

According to him, the 5.3 kilometers of blacktopping will be constructed from Dhulabari Mode to the office of Thoplebiran Community Forest of Khuttidangi through the market area under Shaheed Marg.

The road will have a breadth of 12 meters with drain and double lane. Similarly, the 8.5-km-long road from Bhattarai Chowk at Kakadvitta in the eastern border to Bahundangi Bazaar under Suryodayamarga with double lane and 11 metres breadth will be blacktopped.

The roads will be constructed under the leadership of local governments. As per the agreement with the World Bank, both the roads should be constructed by 15 July 2025.
