KATHMANDU: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) will start accepting candidate applications for the upcoming local by-elections starting tomorrow (Thursday).

According to RSP MP Ganesh Parajuli, the central election coordination committee coordinator, the committee will request candidates from all seven provinces’ relevant districts and municipalities.

“Once we call for candidates, interested individuals will come forward. Then, the election operation committee and provincial and district leaders will meet to discuss who to nominate and how to organize the process,” Parajuli told Khabarhub. “If there’s no consensus, a primary selection may also take place.”

Parajuli clarified that RSP will not collaborate with any other political parties, except for independent candidates.

According to the Election Commission, elections will be held in 41 constituencies, but RSP can only field candidates in 39 of them. In two constituencies, the district coordination committees will hold elections, and RSP will not be able to field candidates in those areas, as this is the first time the party is participating in local elections.

RSP had first fielded candidates for the House of Representatives in the 2079 election. Currently, the party holds 21 seats in the House of Representatives, but has no representation in the provincial or local levels.

The central election coordination committee for local elections consists of Parajuli, along with MPs Shishir Khanal, Hari Dhakal, Nisha Dangi, and Bindwasini Kamsakar. Also on the committee are Treasurer Lima Adhikari, Central Members Ganesh Karki, Bijay Jairu, and Kamal Subedi.

They will make final decisions on candidate nominations and take responsibility for election preparations in various regions. Additionally, election operation committees will be formed at the provincial and district levels, as Parajuli mentioned.
