KATHMANDU: Spain has advanced to the semifinals of the 17th edition of the Euro Cup football tournament.
In the first quarterfinal held on Friday night, Spain secured their spot in the semifinals by defeating host Germany 2-1.
The match was pushed into extra time after a 1-1 draw in regulation. Spain’s Michael Merino scored the winning goal during extra time.
Towards the end of the game, Spain’s Dani Carvajal received a second yellow card and was sent off.
Earlier, Dani Olmo gave Spain the lead with a goal in the 51st minute.
However, Spain could not maintain this lead as Germany’s substitute Florian Wirtz scored in the 89th minute to level the match.
Spain reached the quarterfinals by defeating Georgia 4-1 in the Round of 16.
Meanwhile, Germany’s journey ended in the quarterfinals after a 2-0 victory over Denmark in their Round of 16 match.
Spain is considered a major contender for the title in this Euro Cup.
They have won the Euro Cup three times, in 1964, 2008, and 2012, and were runners-up in 1984.
