KATHMANDU: Baikuntha Neupane, the mayor of Byas Municipality, has challenged the Pokhara High Court’s order to recount votes in Byas Municipality.

Mayor Neupane has filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court seeking an interim order.

The hearing is scheduled for June 9.

The High Court’s order followed a final hearing on a petition filed by Deepak Raj Joshi, a candidate for the position of mayor of Byas Municipality.

The court ruled in favor of the petitioner, deeming his claim substantial.

The joint bench of High Court Judges Rajan Prasad Bhattarai and Nirmala Poudel Bhattarai delivered the verdict in support of Joshi.

Joshi had lodged the writ on May 26, 2022, naming five parties, including the Election Commission, as defendants, citing alleged irregularities in the vote-counting process.

Baikuntha Neupane, who was declared the mayor of Byas Municipality after securing 12,078 votes in the local elections held on May 13, 2022, faced a challenge from Joshi, who garnered 11,826 votes, marking a close contest.
