Coalition parties fail to reach consensus on NA elections seat-sharing
The meeting of the major parties in the ruling coalition held at the Prime Minister’s office on Saturday in Baluwatar ended inconclusively.
The meeting failed to address the issue of seat allocation in the National Assembly elections, causing a deadlock among the political parties.
Today’s meeting saw the participation of leaders from the Nepali Congress, CPN Maoist Center, CPN Unified Socialist, Janata Samajwadi Party Nepal, Janamat Party, Janamorcha Nepal, Nagarik Unmukti Party, and others allied in the coalition.
It’s understood that discussions in the meeting primarily revolved around the division of seats among the major four parties.
Govt forms probe committee on Barhathwa incident, victim’s family to get Rs 1 million as compensation
The government has decided to provide Rs. 1 million in relief to the family of the youth who was killed in Barhathawa, Sarlahi.
The Ministry of Home Affairs, as per the directive of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, announced that the family of the deceased, Jayashankar Sah of Ward No. 6 of Barhathawa Municipality, will receive financial support of one million rupees.
A committee comprising the Deputy Inspector General of Nepal Police, Thaneswor Gautam, and the Director of the National Investigation Department, Bhim Bahadur Budhathoki, has been formed under the coordination of Home Ministry Secretary Suresh Man Shrestha to investigate the incident.
Unified Socialist secretariat entrusts three leaders with selection of NA election candidates
In a significant development, CPN (Unified Socialist), a pivotal member of the Dahal-led government, convened a secretariat meeting on Saturday at the party’s central office in Aloknagar.
The outcome of the meeting reveals a strategic move as three key leaders have been entrusted with the crucial responsibility of selecting candidates from the party for the upcoming National Assembly (NA) election. Jagannath Khatiwada, the chief of the party’s publicity department, confirmed this decision.
The designated leaders for this task are party Chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal, Vice-Chairman Rajendra Pandey, and General Secretary Ghan Shyam Bhusal. The decision reflects the party’s proactive approach in preparing for the NA election scheduled for January 25, which is anticipated to be a competitive contest between the ruling alliance and the main opposition party, CPN-UML.
Ruling alliance rejects collaboration with UML in NA election
The ruling alliance has reached a unanimous decision to abstain from any collaboration with the main opposition party in the upcoming National Assembly (NA) election.
Despite recent talks between key leaders, including the Prime Minister and Chairman of CPN (Maoist Center), President of Nepali Congress Sher Bahadur Deuba, and Chairman of CPN-UML KP Sharma Oli, the alliance has firmly decided against joining forces with the opposition.
In anticipation of further developments, the alliance is set to convene at 4 PM today to formalize decisions regarding their strategy for the upcoming election. The decision holds particular significance as 20 seats are set to become vacant on March 4, including representatives from various political entities: 9 from UML, 4 from Nepali Congress, 3 from Maoist Center, 3 from the Unified Socialist Party, and 1 from Janata Samajwadi Party.
Govinda KC and supporters arrested in Maitighar protest
The police have detained seven individuals, including prominent medical activist Govinda KC, during a demonstration at Maitighar, Kathmandu.
The arrests transpired as Govinda KC and his supporters were actively participating in protests in an area declared prohibited by the government. The activist’s demands encompass immediate actions against crimes committed during the armed conflict, justice for affected families, and the expedited completion of the transitional justice process. Additionally, he called for an accountable and transparent appointment of a director at the Medical Education Commission.
