Prachanda urges Nepali leaders to learn from B’desh crisis

BIRATNAGAR: Chairman of the Maoist Center, Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda, has stated that Nepalese leaders should take note of recent events in Bangladesh.

Speaking briefly to journalists in Biratnagar on Monday, Dahal responded to questions about the political situation in Bangladesh, where Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned following intensified student protests and subsequently left the country.

Prachanda remarked that some have suggested a similar scenario could unfold in Nepal.

He expressed concern that the developments in Bangladesh have not been thoroughly analyzed in Nepal.

Prachanda commented, “It is unfortunate that some rulers believe that having a majority means they can act without regard to consequences.”

In another development regarding constitutional amendments, Prachanda made it clear that he is not opposed to changes.

However, he differentiated between the amendment proposed by the ruling Nepali Congress-UML coalition and the one he supports.

Prachanda explained, “We support constitutional amendments to enhance rights based on our achievements so far. We criticize the current government’s approach because their intention appears to be to reduce rather than expand people’s rights.”

Prachanda further asserted that constitutional amendments would not be feasible if the Congress and UML act unilaterally.

“Given the current composition of the House of Representatives and the National Assembly, any amendment solely by these parties would lack constitutional and legal validity,” he said, “therefore, I believe such actions lack philosophical merit.”
