DHAKA: Nearly 100 individuals were killed on Sunday in renewed violence in Bangladesh, as clashes between supporters of the ruling party and protesters demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina intensified.
In response to the escalating unrest, the government has suspended mobile internet services and imposed a nationwide curfew indefinitely, media reports said.
The new round of clashes began as protesters, involved in a non-cooperation movement organized by Students against discrimination, clashed with Awami League supporters over a controversial job quota system.
The violence led the government to declare a three-day general holiday starting today to ensure public safety.
In addition to the fatalities, hundreds have been injured in the clashes, shootings, and counter-attacks reported across the country. Local media indicate that 14 police officers have lost their lives, with 13 of these deaths occurring at the Enayetpur police station in Sirajganj and one in Elliotganj, Comilla.
Over 300 police officers have also sustained injuries.
