Film halls across country to remain shut in protest against taxation

KATHMANDU: Movie theaters nationwide are set to close down on Monday as a symbolic protest against the ‘impractical’ tax hike imposed by the government.

The Film Producers’ Association has accused the government of levying taxes exceeding 33% in various names, following the implementation of value-added tax (VAT) escalation and corporate tax, and also introducing additional taxes contrary to the provisions of the existing laws.

Expressing discontent over the taxation measures beyond the value-added tax, the film halls have decided to shut down today in a bid to draw attention to their demands and to inform the public about the adverse impact on the film industry.
