KIRTIPUR: The Tribhuvan University Central Library has been upgraded as the country’s first library equipped with radio frequency identification (RFID) system.

Foreign Minister Narayan Prakash Saud and External Affairs Minister of India, S Jaishankar, jointly inaugurated the newly constructed building for the RFID-equipped central library on the premises of TU amidst a function here today.

With the application of IFRD system, the records of books distributed and returned shall be maintained in an automated way.

In addition to the library building inauguration, the two ministers virtually inaugurated 25 schools, 32 health institutions, and one monastery. These constructions were part of the earthquake rebuilding assistance project initiated by the Government of India after the 2015 devastating earthquake in Nepal.

Following the inauguration, the Indian External Minister said the project to assist the Government of Nepal to build 75 structures including the Central Library building in the aftermath of 2015 project has been completed.

He also announced a monetary assistance of one billion rupees to undertake the rebuilding efforts in the areas affected by the recent November 3 Jajarkot earthquake.

The Indian Minister also said that efforts are underway to promote various dimensions of Nepal-India connectivity and objective of all these efforts were to bring significant change in people’s lives.

As he said, Nepal-India bilateral agreements including the one related to power trade reached during the visit and the inauguration of library and other structures are testimony that his visit remained outstanding and highly successful.
Foreign Minister Saud expressed the view that the relationship between the two countries has crossed the milestones when the TU Central Library got the new building equipped with IFRD system.

The important support of Indian government in different difficult situations faced by Nepal including earthquake has further strengthened the relations between the two countries, he said, adding that the mutual cooperation and harmony between the two countries would reach a new height in coming days.

Similarly, acting Vice-Chancellor of the Tribhuvan University, Prof Dr Shiva Lal Bhusal, said the TU has been getting support of India since its establishment.

Likewise, Executive Director of TU Central Library, Sagar Raj Subedi, explained that 2,000 students could use the newly constructed three-storey library at a time. The new building has disabled-friendly toilet and lift facility. The library has covered total 7,800 square feet space.

The construction of the library building was started from 2077 BS and it completed recently. There is also a separate room of Indian books. More than 50 computers could be used at the library to get more knowledge through ‘e-resources’.
