Are Balen’s supporters ‘unfollowing’ PM Oli’s Facebook page?

KATHMANDU: Supporters of Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balen Shah have initiated a campaign to ‘unfollow’ Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Facebook.

On Tuesday afternoon, Balen Shah’s Secretariat reported that Facebook had removed one of his posts.

The Secretariat claimed that the removal was prompted by a report filed by some Oli’s supporters.

In response, Balen expressed his displeasure with the removal of his post and urged that rather than removing his content, those responsible should face consequences.

He wrote, “Don’t focus on the post. Hold the government accountable. If I am at fault, then bring me to justice; if not, then hold the real culprits responsible.”

Following his statements, Balen’s supporters began to ‘unfollow’ Oli’s page in protest.

On Tuesday, KP Sharma Oli’s page had 666,000 followers. By Wednesday morning, this number had decreased to 601,000.

The controversy began when Balen posted on Facebook accusing UML’s provincial MP Rekha Sharma of “tourturing” a minor who had been employed as a domestic worker.

Balen expressed frustration over the lack of action against MP Sharma and directed his anger towards Prime Minister Oli.

What began as a dispute over the post has now escalated into a larger conflict, evident in the significant drop in followers on Oli’s page.
