QATAR: Holders Qatar beat Uzbekistan in a penalty shootout to reach the semi-finals of the Asian Cup.
Uzbekistan goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov pushed the ball into his own net after a Hassan Al-Haydos cross to give Qatar a first-half lead.
Odiljon Hamrobekov fired into the bottom corner to level for Uzbekistan in the 59th minute and the scores remained level throughout extra time.
Asian Cup hosts Qatar won the shootout 3-2.
Qatar, who are the current holders after winning in 2019, will face Iran in the semi-finals on Wednesday (15:00 GMT).
Iran came from behind to knock out four-time champions Japan in Saturday’s earlier game.
Hidemasa Morita’s 28th-minute goal gave Japan the lead, but Mohammad Mohebi levelled for Iran in the second half.
And Brighton forward Alireza Jahanbakhsh scored a penalty in the sixth minute of added time to seal victory for Iran, who are looking to reach the final for the first time since they won the tournament in 1976.
Tottenham forward Son Heung-min’s South Korea play Jordan in the other semi-final on Tuesday.
