“The government has implemented policy provisions to protect foreign investment,” said Gurung. “Nepal offers a favorable investment climate, allowing multinational companies like TikTok to operate confidently with the guarantee of returns.”
Gurung also discussed the social responsibility requirements for IT companies, citing TikTok’s compliance with regulations set by the Ministry.
He noted that the platform resumed operations in Nepal after fulfilling these conditions.
The Minister emphasized the importance of collaboration between the government, civil society, and social media users to achieve the vision of a digital Nepal.
He praised TikTok’s contribution to Nepal’s educational modernization, digital literacy campaigns, and its support for smart classrooms, workshops, and scholarships.
Regarding the role of TikTok, Gurung stated that the platform has agreed to contribute to the promotion of Nepal’s tourism, the development of IT infrastructure, and educational progress, making it a positive influence on Nepal’s social and economic development.
Highlighting the government’s goal to turn Nepal into an IT hub, Gurung revealed plans to create 500,000 to 1 million job opportunities in the IT sector over the next decade.
He also reiterated the government’s commitment to cybersecurity, emphasizing the need to curb rising cybercrimes, particularly those targeting women and children.
“Strict adherence to existing laws, acts, and procedures is essential for the responsible operation of social media platforms,” Minister Gurung said, stressing that a civilized society can only be built by preventing cybercrime through appropriate ICT usage.
