KATHMANDU: Vice President Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav has urged the Qatari government to implement 24-hour insurance coverage for Nepali workers in Qatar to ensure their safety and well-being.

During a meeting with Qatari Ambassador to Nepal, Mishaal Bin Mohammad Ali Al Ansari, at the Vice President’s Office in Lainchaur on Tuesday, Yadav highlighted the urgent need to address the plight of Nepali workers in the Gulf nation.

The Vice President appealed for the rescue and proper compensation for Nepali workers who have died or been injured in Qatar. He also called for necessary assistance for Nepalis currently in hospitals, deportation centers, and prisons across the country.

Yadav emphasized the challenging situation of 67 Nepali nationals serving prison sentences in Qatar and the growing number of undocumented workers living in precarious conditions.

“I request Your Excellency to grant amnesty or reduce the prison terms, and to help undocumented Nepalis either regularize their status or assist them in returning home to Nepal,” he stated.

The Vice President also expressed satisfaction with the ongoing collaboration between Nepal and Qatar in multilateral and regional forums, commending Qatar’s role in mediating the release of Nepali citizen Bipin Joshi and other hostages.

In response, Qatari Ambassador Ansari acknowledged the importance of strengthening bilateral relations, particularly in promoting investment and protecting Nepali workers’ welfare.

He informed that there are currently around 400,000 Nepali workers in Qatar and assured that efforts would be made to further enhance their welfare.
