Earthquake jolts Nepal’s Sindhupalchowk district

A 4.2 magnitude earthquake struck the Sindhupalchowk district on Tuesday morning. According to the National Earthquake Measurement and Research Center, the quake hit Shikharpur in Sindhupalchok at 6:11 am. The tremor was felt across Sindhupalchowk, Kavre, and the Kathmandu Valley.

Police Headquarters transfers 587 Police Inspectors

In a sweeping move, 587 Police Inspectors of Nepal Police have been transferred simultaneously. The Police Head Office has announced that Suresh Khatri will be moving to the Police Division Budhanilkantha, Suraj Shrestha has been reassigned to the District Traffic Office Dhading, and Gayatri Raj Sharma will be posted at the District Traffic Police Office Chitwan. Additionally, Shobha Pandey has been transferred to the District Traffic Police Office Kaski. Bishal Sapkota is being sent to Manahari, Makwanpur, and Rautahat Traffic.

U.S. Embassy in Kathmandu to open more monthly student visa slots starting tomorrow

Beginning tomorrow, the U.S. Embassy in Kathmandu has announced to offer new student visa appointment slots on a monthly basis. These additional slots will be made available on a specific day each month, with the first date set for September 4. This initiative is part of the Embassy’s effort to alleviate the long wait times typically associated with U.S. visa appointments, according to the Embassy. Although the Embassy has previously added extra appointment slots occasionally, this is the first time it will do so consistently each month. To address high demand, the Embassy has also been conducting visa interviews on Sundays, which are generally considered off-days.

Seven deaths in 34 accidents over three years in Humla

Over the past three years, the district has seen a total of 34 road accidents, with seven fatalities reported, according to the District Police Office, Humla. Most of these accidents have been attributed to road defects.Police Inspector Narendra Chand noted that in the fiscal year 2078/79BS, there were six accidents that resulted in the death of a child. In the fiscal year 2079/80BS, there were 10 accidents, leading to two deaths and 24 injuries, none of which were serious.

Gold price remains unchanged today

The price of both gold and silver have remained unchanged in the Nepali market today. According to the Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Traders, gold was traded at the same price as on Monday. Specifically, gold is priced at Rs 152,000 per tola, while silver was traded at 1,775 rupees per tola today.

726 people receive National ID cards in Taplejung

A total of 726 individuals have received their national identity cards in Taplejung district. The District Administration Office initiated the distribution process by collecting relevant information from residents. Basanta Niraula, an employee in the registration section for national ID cards, reported that 347 women and 379 men were issued their ID cards. To date, the administration has prepared 7,967 national ID cards. A backlog of essential cards occurred due to delays in printing. The requirement for citizens to be physically present at the office to collect their cards further complicated the distribution process.

Former IGPs call for action against Communication Minister Gurung

The Former Police Organization Chief Forum has urged Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to take action against Communication Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung. In a statement issued on Tuesday, the forum expressed serious concern over Minister Gurung’s use of language during a public event, where he reportedly stated that “the tongue of the Inspector General of Nepal Police should be cut off.” The forum emphasized that such remarks violate the principle of freedom of expression. Minister Gurung made the controversial statement during a public event in Pokhara on Saturday. The forum has demanded a formal apology from the Minister and has called on Prime Minister Oli to take appropriate action against him.

Committee recommends measures to combat monkey menace in agriculture sector

The committee formed to address the growing issue of monkey menace in the agriculture sector has submitted its report to the government. The committee, established on Baishak 26 and coordinated by Bedh Kumar Dhakal, the Deputy Director of the Department of National Park and Wildlife Conservation, has put forward several key recommendations.

NEPSE Index shows modest 0.24 percent increase

The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) Index on Tuesday saw a slight rise of 6.90 points, or 0.24%, closing at 2,830.16 points. This follows a previous session where the index gained 127.32 points, ending at 2,823.25 points. The trading day started with the index at 2,834.42 points, displaying notable fluctuations throughout. It peaked at 2,860.43 points and dipped to 2,802.92 points before finishing at its final level. There was active trading with 328 stocks involved in 144,197 transactions.

ANFA awards Rs 50,000 each to Nepal’s SAFF U20 team members

The All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) has awarded Rs 50,000 each to the members of Nepal’s SAFF U20 team. Nepal secured the runner-up position in the 2024 SAFF U20 Championship, held from August 18-28 at the ANFA Complex, after being defeated by Bangladesh in the finals. Earlier, ANFA had announced its decision to provide cash prizes along with 20 percent of the revenue generated from ticket sales to the players and match officials. In total, ANFA distributed Rs 1,645,920 among the players, coach, and team officials. Each player received Rs 65,040, which included their share of the ticket sales revenue.

Parliamentary committee urges govt to ensure inclusion in ambassadorial appointments

The International Relations and Tourism Committee of the House of Representatives has urged the government to uphold the principle of proportional inclusion when recommending candidates for Nepali ambassadorial posts in various countries. During a meeting held today at Singha Durbar, the Committee engaged in discussions with the Minister for Foreign Affairs and directed the government to adhere to the provisions of the Constitution and the Ambassador Appointment Guidelines of 2075. Committee Chairperson Raj Kishor Yadav emphasized that ambassadorial appointments should be inclusive and transparent, in line with the preamble of the Constitution, as well as Articles 42 and 282, and the Ambassador Appointment Guidelines.

Deadline for cooperative fraud investigation extended by 15 days

The deadline for the Parliamentary Special Committee to investigate the cooperative fraud case and submit its report has been extended by 15 days. Surya Bahadur Thapa, Chairman of the committee and a lawmaker, proposed the extension during a House of Representatives (HoR) meeting on Tuesday. The proposal was unanimously approved by the members.

NA members demand investigation into alleged irregularities in MEC results

During a meeting of the National Assembly (NA) today, lawmakers voiced concerns over alleged irregularities in the Medical Education Commission (MEC) examination results, calling for an investigation to uncover the facts. Speaking during the zero hour session, several members stated that the revealed details suggest irregularities in the results, which should be addressed through a thorough investigation. Krishan Prasad Paudel accused the MEC of negligence in handling the results, while Goma Devi Timilsina stated that the disclosed reports are sufficient to question the credibility of the exam.

Two drown while bathing in Arghakhanchi

Two people tragically lost their lives after being swept away by the Chhare River while bathing in a spring in Dhawa, Sitganga Municipality-14. The incident occurred this afternoon, claiming the lives of 28-year-old Umesh Paudel and 23-year-old Kishore Raskoti, both residents of Banganga Municipality-2, Kapilvastu District. Chief Pratit Singh Rathore of the District Police Office, Arghakhanchi, confirmed the incident. The bodies were later recovered downstream.
