KATHMANDU: The International Relations and Tourism Committee of the House of Representatives has urged the government to uphold the principle of proportional inclusion when recommending candidates for Nepali ambassadorial posts in various countries.
During a meeting held today at Singha Durbar, the Committee engaged in discussions with the Minister for Foreign Affairs and directed the government to adhere to the provisions of the Constitution and the Ambassador Appointment Guidelines of 2075.
Committee Chairperson Raj Kishor Yadav emphasized that ambassadorial appointments should be inclusive and transparent, in line with the preamble of the Constitution, as well as Articles 42 and 282, and the Ambassador Appointment Guidelines.
He also mentioned that the Committee would continue discussions with the Foreign Ministry regarding the Ambassador Appointment Guidelines.
The Committee’s discussions with the Foreign Minister also covered the recent visit to India and the process of appointing ambassadors.
On this occasion, lawmakers stressed the importance of making ambassadorial recommendations transparent and non-controversial.
Lawmaker Bimalendra Nidhi described the recent visit to India by the Foreign Minister as fruitful and expressed confidence that it would further strengthen mutual welfare and relations between the two countries.
Similarly, Raghuji Mahaseth emphasized the need to maintain equally strong diplomatic relations with other countries and noted the success of the Foreign Minister’s visit to India.
Pashupati Shumsher JB Rana called for an update on the progress of the Pancheshwar Project, while Bhim Prasad Acharya stressed that ambassadors appointed to various countries should be accountable to the nation and its people.
Eknath Dhakal highlighted the need to make ambassadorial recommendations more systematic in accordance with the Ambassador Appointment Guidelines in the future, while Shishir Khanal reiterated that the appointment process should strictly follow these guidelines.
Lawmakers Hit Bahadur Tamang, Prabhu Sah, Prem Suwal, Ganga Ram Chaudhary, and Sunita Baral voiced their opinions that Nepal should take active steps to implement the issues raised during the Foreign Minister’s visit to India and ensure transparency in ambassadorial recommendations.
