KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli emphasized that the national aspiration of ‘Prosperous Nepal, Happy Nepali’ can be realized by upholding the fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution and honoring national and international commitments to human rights.
Speaking at the inauguration of the three-day international conference on gender inclusiveness, organized by the National Human Rights Commission in Kathmandu, PM Oli highlighted that Nepal’s Constitution incorporates essential fundamental rights, and the government is committed to implementing them fully.
He also noted the abolition of the caste system by law and pointed out the significant achievement of guaranteeing at least 33% women’s participation in all state bodies at three levels before the Constitution was drafted.
This, he said, led to the country having its first female President, Chief Justice, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Chief Secretary, and the government continues to promote increased female participation in state bodies.
PM Oli acknowledged that around 20% of Nepal’s population still lives below the poverty line, and empowering citizens will not be possible without achieving poverty alleviation.
“We are dedicated to implementing the fundamental rights outlined in the Constitution and fulfilling our international commitments. We will eradicate poverty and achieve the goal of ‘Prosperous Nepal, Happy Nepali’,” PM Oli reiterated.
He also shared that the government and the Human Rights Commission are working together to achieve social justice and equality, recognizing that prosperity alone is insufficient for national development.
According to him, it is crucial that citizens also experience a dignified life, along with peace, safety, and rights.
“The government’s efforts are aimed at ensuring not just prosperity, but also a dignified life for all, characterized by peace, safety, and rights,” PM Oli concluded.
