KATHMANDU: CPN-Maoist Center General Secretary Dev Gurung has raised concerns that the new alliance between the Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML is attempting to regress the country’s progress by amending the Constitution.

During an interaction in Kathmandu on Wednesday, Gurung mentioned that discussions of constitutional amendments under the guise of a new coalition could endanger the nation’s achievements.

He asserted that efforts to revert the country to the 1990 Constitution are regressive and backward steps.

While efforts are being made to form a national consensus government under the leadership of the Maoist Centre, Gurung accused some parties of creating unnecessary noise and reaching an agreement at midnight.

Gurung also expressed concerns that despite the absence of significant reasons to leave the current government, there might be arrests related to the transitional justice bill and the Bhutanese refugee case.

He emphasized that any action to form a government should not violate constitutional provisions and highlighted that if support for the government is withdrawn, the Prime Minister would need to seek a vote of confidence in the House.
