KATHMANDU: The 10th General Convention of the CPN- Unified Socialist has been ongoing for two days at Pragya Bhawan, Kamaladi, Kathmandu.

Unified Socialist secretaries Ramkumari Jhakri and Rajendra Rai have been actively involved in the convention as key scriptwriters.

Both Jhakri and Rai are prominent leaders within the party.

Former Urban Development Minister Jhakri has been discontent with Chairman Madhav Nepal since her removal from the ministerial post within six months.

Their relationship remains strained.

Ramkumari is reportedly lobbying to replace Nepal with General Secretary Ghanshyam Bhusal as the party chairperson.

However, former Chief Minister of Koshi Province, Rajendra Rai, asserts that there is currently no alternative to Madhav Kumar Nepal.

Rai has also stated that if Bhusal emerges as a contender for the chairperson position, he will compete against him.

Rai argues that since the party was founded by Madhav Nepal after rebelling against the CPN-UML, his leadership is still justified, and thus, there is no immediate alternative.

In contrast, Ramkumari believes that Madhav Nepal has failed to lead the party effectively and that a change is necessary.

She supports Ghanashyam Bhusal for the party leadership, claiming he can elevate the Unified Socialist to new heights.

Ramkumari has expressed her readiness to compete for the general secretary position if Bhusal runs for chairperson.

Senior leader Jhala Nath Khanal has not formally withdrawn from the chairperson race but has made internal decisions that have relieved Madhav Nepal.

Given the current scenario, a leadership contest between Madhav Nepal and General Secretary Bhusal is likely.

Some party members are lobbying to re-elect Madhav Nepal as chairperson through consensus.

Secretary Jhakri warns that if the party does not seek alternatives now, it may face significant losses, potentially winning only one or two seats in the 2084 elections.

She has officially started lobbying to elect Bhusal as chairperson and herself as general secretary.
