NC lawmaker Khatiwada accuses Home Minister Lamichhane of authoritarianism

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) Member of Parliament (MP) Ramhari Khatiwada has lambasted Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane for enforcing a directive that requires traffic offenders to perform labor on the roads.

Speaking during Sunday’s meeting of the House of Representatives, Khatiwada vehemently opposed Home Minister Lamichhane’s mandate, demanding an immediate cessation of the practice and a return to the rule of law.

Khatiwada went further, accusing Home Minister Lamichhane of attempting to impose dictatorial measures in governing the nation.

He questioned the legal basis upon which the Home Minister justified the imposition of such labor on those apprehended on the streets.

“The administration should not be conducted through media sensationalism over trivial issues; it must adhere to legal frameworks. No individual should be subject to exploitation,” he asserted.

“Running the country cannot be reduced to mere rhetoric and social media posts. Let us establish a system that upholds the rule of law.”

Home Minister Lamichhane had announced on Republic Day via social media that traffic offenders would be tasked with road labor under the guise of volunteering.

However, as soon as the police began implementing this directive the following day, widespread criticism erupted over compelling citizens to engage in street labor without due process.
