DALLAS: The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 commenced with an exciting Group A match between the USA and Canada, both teams making their tournament debuts.

USA, led by Monank Patel, won the toss and elected to bowl first, aiming to capitalize on the fresh wicket and early movement for their pacers.

Canada’s Aaron Johnson set an aggressive tone right from the start, smashing the first ball of the tournament over extra cover.

His partner, Navneet Dhaliwal, followed suit with a boundary in the next over, but it was Johnson who dominated, hitting USA’s Ali Khan for three boundaries in the third over, giving Canada a flying start.

Harmeet Singh provided a crucial breakthrough for the USA, dismissing the dangerous Johnson, who mistimed a shot towards cow corner and was caught by Nitish Kumar in the deep.

The USA gained further momentum with the run-out of Pargat Singh shortly after.

Dhaliwal, however, steadied the Canadian innings with solid support from Nicholas Kirton. Dhaliwal reached the first fifty of the tournament in the 12th over.

Kirton then joined the fray, hitting a six and a four off Shadley Van Schalkwyk to accelerate the scoring rate.

USA’s experienced all-rounder Corey Anderson made a significant impact by dismissing Dhaliwal with his first delivery and then taking a sharp catch to remove the set Kirton in the 18th over.

This gave the USA a much-needed boost towards the end of the innings.

Despite this, Canada managed to finish strong, thanks to explosive cameos from Shreyas Movva (32* off 16) and Dilpreet Bajwa (11 off 5), who added 35 runs in the last two overs, setting a challenging target of 195 for the USA.

The USA’s lineup includes Steven Taylor, Monank Patel (c), Andries Gous, Aaron Jones, Nitish Kumar, Corey Anderson, Harmeet Singh, Shadley Van Schalkwyk, Jessy Singh, Ali Khan, and Saurabh Netravalkar.

Canada’s squad features Aaron Johnson, Navneet Dhaliwal, Pargat Singh, Nicholas Kirton, Shreyas Movva, Dilpreet Bajwa, Saad Bin Zafar (c), Nikhil Dutta, Dilon Heyliger, Kaleem Sana, and Jeremy Gordon.

The stage is now set for an exhilarating chase as the USA aims to clinch victory in their T20 World Cup opener by overcoming the 195-run target set by their North American rivals.
