KATHMANDU: Families of Nepali individuals serving in the Russian army are urging the government to create a conducive environment for the safe return of their loved ones.
During a press conference held in Kathmandu on Friday, they highlighted the precarious conditions faced by some Nepali expatriates who have been adversely affected, emphasizing the need to facilitate a secure atmosphere for their return.
The families revealed that some of those recruited in the Russian army are facing challenging circumstances, while a few have encountered unfortunate situations. They appealed to the government to ensure a supportive environment for a safe homecoming.
It was disclosed during the conference that even those who have returned from the Russian army have sensitive stories to share about the Nepali community’s situation in the foreign land.
Suman Rai, a youth who successfully returned after serving in the Russian army, shared that despite receiving training in Russia, many Nepalis faced mistreatment due to communication barriers and cultural differences. He emphasized the necessity of understanding the difficulties faced by Nepali individuals abroad and providing appropriate support.
He further disclosed that even during the conflict, a significant number of Nepalis lost their lives while serving in the Russian army. Additionally, instances of abuse during wartime by Russian authorities were highlighted.
Suman Rai reported that approximately 14-15,000 Nepalis are in the Russian army, emphasizing the challenges they face and urging the government to address their concerns promptly.
