48.28% voter turnout in Gaurishankar rural municipality

KATHMANDU: A voter turnout of 48.28% was recorded in Gaurishankar rural municipality, Dolakha, during Sunday’s by-election.

Most of the nine wards in the municipality saw less than 50% voter turnout.

According to the Election Commission, 7,589 votes were cast out of a total of 15,718 registered voters.

Information Officer Bishal KC from Dolakha’s Chief Election Office reported that the votes were cast across 21 polling centers in 12 polling locations.

The by-election for the position of vice-chairperson saw 16 candidates, seven representing political parties and nine independents, compete.

The by-election was necessitated by the demise of Shyamsundar Tamang, who had been elected as vice-chairperson from the Nepali Congress during the 2022 local elections. He passed away last year due to a cardiac arrest.
