KATHMANDU: Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari has emphasized the need to conserve the country’s linguistic and cultural diversity.
Inaugurating the ‘First International Mother-Language Journalism Conference’ on the occasion of the centennial of journalism in mother languages in Nepal, the former President highlighted that linguistic and cultural diversity fosters connections among generations.
“Journalism in mother languages helps raise the voice of marginalized communities,” she said, adding that local journalists must be aware of local contexts and developments.
According to Bhandari, local journalists using mother tongues can produce more authentic information about specific communities.
“Democracy and mass communications have inseparable relations. Responsible journalism, informed citizenry, and accountable governments are complementary to democracy,” Bhandari reminded, urging journalists to write accurate and balanced news stories.
The conference is attended by journalists from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Japan, and Sri Lanka. The event also includes virtual participation.
