KATHMANDU: Last week in Nepal was characterized by a whirlwind of political activities, judicial mandates, economic fluctuations, and cultural celebrations, reflecting the multifaceted dynamics of the nation’s landscape.

Political developments took center stage as the CPN-UML announced its candidates for key by-elections.

Suhang Nembang, son of the late Subash Chandra Nembang, emerged as the UML’s nominee for the Ilam-2 constituency, while Daman Bahadur Bhandari was chosen for the Bajhang-1 provincial assembly by-election.

This decision, made during a Secretariat meeting chaired by UML Chairman KP Oli, marked a significant political move for the party.

However, the political arena saw further complexity with the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) selecting Milan Limbu as its candidate for the Ilam-2 by-election, indicating a shifting political landscape with candidates transitioning from one party to another.

Notably, the CPN-Maoist Center recommended four potential candidates for the Ilam-2 by-election, reflecting the party’s strategic positioning in the electoral fray.

Amidst these nominations, discussions between Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba hinted at potential strides towards consensus and cooperation, particularly in addressing parliamentary obstructions and advancing transitional justice initiatives.

Overall, the week’s events encapsulated the diverse facets of Nepal’s socio-political landscape, showcasing the nation’s resilience, cultural richness, and ongoing efforts towards progress and development amidst various challenges and opportunities.

Simultaneously, the Supreme Court issued significant mandates, directing the establishment of a juvenile court within the fiscal year and instructing authorities to grant affiliation to Durga Prasai’s B&C Medical College.

These judicial interventions underscored the court’s commitment to upholding legal frameworks and ensuring access to justice.

Culturally, the vibrant festival of Holi, celebrated with fervor across hilly regions and the Terai, brought communities together in joyous celebration, marking the arrival of spring and the triumph of good over evil.

However, amidst the festivities, tragedy struck in Achham, where a fatal tractor accident claimed the lives of five individuals, highlighting the pressing need for improved road safety measures and infrastructure development.

On the economic front, the Department of Tourism commenced the issuance of permits for climbers aiming to conquer Mt. Everest, signaling the beginning of the spring mountaineering season.

Concurrently, the Nepali gold market witnessed a historic surge in prices, reaching new all-time highs, reflecting global economic uncertainties and fluctuations.

The price of fine gold reached an astounding Rs 130,000 per tola, while standard gold was traded at Rs 129,400 per tola last week.

Meanwhile, the Kathmandu Metropolitan City set a deadline for private schools to adopt names reflecting Nepali identity, underlining efforts towards cultural preservation and national identity within educational institutions.
