Cabinet meeting underway at Singha Durbar

KATHMANDU: A meeting of the Council of Ministers currently underway at Singha Durbar is expected to make a crucial decision regarding the formation of a high-level commission of inquiry into Friday’s shooting incident at Balkumari in Lalitpur.

The incident, which resulted in the tragic deaths of 23-year-old Sujan Rawat from Dailekh and 22-year-old Birender Sah from Achham, has prompted the government to take swift action.

In response to the incident, the Prime Minister has directed Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Narayankaji Shrestha to propose the establishment of a high-level inquiry committee.

This proposal was discussed in the coalition party meeting held on Sunday, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive and impartial investigation.

The coordination of the commission is expected to be entrusted to a former judge.

The government has already taken steps to provide financial relief, announcing a compensation of Rs 10 lakh per person to the families of the deceased.

The gravity of the situation has led to the decision to go beyond the initial investigation carried out by the committee formed on the day of the incident.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Lalmani Acharya of the Kathmandu Valley Police Office Ranipokhari had been appointed to lead the initial investigation committee.
