MPs suggest ways to keep House in order

KATHMANDU: Rastriya Swatantra Party’s Sabita Gautam suggested that MPs attend the parliament on time, follow a dress code and the national anthem be played instead of the national tune.

She was speaking at the meeting today of the House of Representatives Rules of Procedure Drafting Committee. Gautam stressed that there should be a code for punctuality, dress code and respect for the national anthem.

She also stressed on the neutrality of the role of the Speaker in the House, which should be like a referee of a sports event.

Likewise, Chief Whip of CPN (Maoist Center) Hitraj Pandey suggested strict rules to make the house dignified and disciplined. Use of mobile phones, reading newspapers and the like when major issues are being discussed should be discouraged.

CPN (UML) leader and former speaker Subas Nembang if a member speaks something inconsistent in the meeting or when an unrelated topic enters the meeting the speaker should intervene, while the members may also raise objection over it.

In the meeting held under the chair of senior member Chitra Bahadur KC it was suggested that the practice to surround the well while protesting in the House should be discouraged, as it is against the rules.
