KATHMANDU: Participants who undertook language exams for shipbuilding and are employed in production sectors (manufacturing) in South Korea, are now eligible to apply for exams in production-oriented sectors.
The Department of Foreign Employment has commenced accepting applications from over 30,000 examinees for the language exams related to shipbuilding, scheduled from January 1-3. EPS Korea Branch has specified that only those who have completed the shipbuilding exams will qualify to apply for jobs in the shipbuilding sector during this period.
Following the Supreme Court Patan’s order to not obstruct applicants who participated in shipbuilding exams from completing forms, the department has now opened applications for them in production-oriented sectors.
Previously, until 2023, exam participants were unable to seek employment in other sectors. However, the Patan High Court had a case regarding examinees’ eligibility for participating in exams for production-oriented sectors. Post the court’s ruling on December 21, only 18 individuals were informed by the EPS Branch to participate in EPS exams.
Subsequently, another plea was filed in the Patan High Court. In Friday’s hearing, the court ordered not to bar anyone from society from taking part in exams, thus putting a halt to all examinees. Following the Korean Ministry of Human Resources’ positive response, the Department of Foreign Employment has notified about the commencement of applications for those who partook in shipbuilding exams, as directed by the court.
The shipbuilding language exams were conducted in August.
Protesters have been advocating that participation in shipbuilding exams should also qualify individuals for exams in other sectors. Tragically, amidst this movement, two individuals lost their lives on Friday.
