CPN-UML to field candidate for President

KATHMANDU: Despite the Maoist Center’s decision to elect the country’s President on the basis of national consensus, the CPN-UML said it would field its candidate for the ceremonial post.

The ruling Maoist had recently decided that the President should be elected on the basis of national consensus.

However, the UML, a major partner in the ruling coalition led by Maoist Center Chairman and Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda, has been insisting that UML should get the post of the President as per the previous agreement between the ruling parties.

UML leader and former Speaker SUbash Chandra Nembang claimed that the parties in the ruling coalition had earlier agreed on UML’s candidacy for the President.

“Since it was already agreed that UML would field a candidate for the presidency, UML will make a claim,” Nemwang said, adding, “The national consensus as proposed by the Maoist Center should be sought on the UML candidate.”

Nemwang further said that CPN-UML Chairman KP Oli has intensified talks with other political parties on the issue.

Similarly, UML leader Pradeep Gyawali, too, said that the consensus candidate that Prime Minister Dahal was talking about is from the UML party.

“The President will be from CPN-UML. There should be no confusion about it,” Gyawali, who is also the Foreign Minister, said.
