Swimmer Gaurika makes new national record



KATHMANDU: Nepali swimmer Gaurika Singh, who clinched a gold medal in the South Asian Games (SAG), has set a new national record in individual performance in the 20th edition of the World Aquatics Championship-2023 underway in Fukuoka, Japan.

Chairperson of Nepal Swimming Association, Ashok Bajracharya informed that Gaurika has set a new national record by completing 50-meter backstroking at 31.44 seconds.

With this, she broke her own previous record when she completed swimming’s 50-meter backstroking category at 31.87 seconds.

Gaurika has improved on the previous record she had established in the 12th SAG championship held in India in 2016.

Likewise, another Nepali swimmer Alexander Shah has also set a new national record by slightly improving his performance in the 100-meter free style category of swimming.

He made the record in men’s freestyle swimming in the championship under the Olympic Qualifier tournament today.

Alexander set a new record in the 100-meter swimming now in 52.94 seconds by improving his previous record of 52.96 seconds.

He had made the previous record in the recently-held 11th NSA Cup Championship.

As informed, two Nepali swimmers are yet to go for performance. Team manager Naresh Baidya informed that Dubana Lama and Alexander are competing in 100-meter and 40-meter free style, respectively.
