NC General Secy Thapa thanks govt for withdrawing decision to remove district election office

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Gagan Thapa has thanked the government for withdrawing from the decision to remove district election offices.

In the budget for FY 2080/81, the government had proposed to keep the election office as a unit in the district administration office.

Parliamentarians including the ruling parties and the main opposition CPN-UML and Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) opposed the proposal and obstructed the parliament on Tuesday.

Responding to the queries of RSP lawmakers in the House of Representatives meeting on Tuesday, Finance Minister Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat clarified that the District Election Office will not be abolished.

NC General Secretary Thapa had previously drawn attention in Parliament to the fact that when the District Election Office is merged with the District Administration, the freedom and fairness of the election will be curtailed.

He welcomed the government’s decision not to revoke the district election offices.
