High-level officials’ involvement in fake Bhutanese refugee scam led to sense of shame and disappointment: Home Minister

KATHMANDU: Home Minister Narayankaji Shrestha has expressed concern over the involvement of high-level individuals in the activities that undermine the citizenship rights of their own fellow citizens, stating that such actions have led to a sense of collective shame and disappointment.

Speaking with representatives of the National Youth Union affiliated with the CPN-UML party, Home Minister Shrestha expressed his willingness to address the issue of fake Bhutanese refugees and assured that the matter would be thoroughly investigated and resolved to its rightful conclusion.

“We regret the unfortunate situation where some of our own citizens have been wrongly stripped of their citizenship, rendering them refugees in foreign lands and contemplating their relocation abroad,” said the Home Minister.

He further added, “Following an investigation, we have now forwarded the case to the court to ensure accountability for the individuals within the state agency responsible for such actions.”

Home Minister Shrestha also emphasized that he has issued clear instructions to the police to refrain from succumbing to any form of pressure, influence, or unwanted interference during the investigation process.

Shrestha said he is determined to ensure an impartial and thorough investigation free from any external influences that may compromise the pursuit of justice.
