Deliberation on School Education Bill begins in Education Committee

KATHMANDU: Discussion on the School Education Bill-2080 has begun in the parliamentary Committee for Education, Health and Information Technology from Sunday.

Minister for Education, Science and Technology Ashok Kumar Rai expressed his confidence that the Bill on school education presented after a long hiatus would bring about positive changes in the country’s education system.
Minister Rai urged the parliamentarians for the earliest endorsement of the Bill that has garnered huge interest from the public.

Parliamentarians attending the meeting emphasized the Bill should take into account a number of factors like the teachers’ vacancy should be fixed, ensuring facilities to the teachers similar to the other civil employees, hike in the salary of the school’s staffs along with the hike in the teachers’ remuneration and improving quality education among others.

They argued that the quality of education in the public school would not improve unless there were stringent provisions that the children of the civil employees, politicians, people’s representatives are enrolled in such schools.
They also pressed for laws seeking to produce students with critical thinking rather than rote learning.

Voicing their concern on the Bill in the Sunday meeting were Dr Chandra Bhandari, Devendra Poudel, Sumana Shrestha, Bidhya Bhattarai, Deepa Sharma, Sarita Bhusal, Dr Toshima Karki, and Dr Kaluram Rai among others.
It may be noted that the Bill was registered in the HoR on September 13 this year.
