PM Dahal highlights challenges and urges transformation in Nepal’s Higher Education System
Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ addressed the issue of Nepal’s higher education challenges during a conference of university vice-chancellors focused on ‘Uniformity in the Standard of Higher Education and Internationalization’ in Dhulikhel, Kavrepalanchok. Expressing concerns, the Prime Minister emphasized the necessity for substantial investments in both physical and digital infrastructures essential for higher education. He highlighted the dilemma faced by the nation, pointing to the inadequate state investments while skilled youths, groomed through national investment, often opt to pursue education abroad.
Bank base rates take dip, paving way for borrowing ease
The base rates of commercial banks have recently shown a notable decline, signifying a positive shift in borrowing dynamics. Among the banks that have disclosed their base rates, 11 institutions showcase a drop from an average of 10.16 percent to a reduced 10.04 percent. All 11 commercial banks have contributed to this decrease in their base rates, although several banks still maintain rates above 10 percent, while some have managed to fall below this threshold.
SC receives writ seeking relief for Durga Prasai’s detention
A petition has been submitted to the Supreme Court challenging the detention of medical practitioner Durga Prasai, alleging a breach of his fundamental human rights. Senior Advocate Dr. Surendra Bhandari filed the writ in the Supreme Court, seeking protection for Prasai’s human rights. The petition argued that Prasai has been unable to partake in his own initiated campaign, asserting a violation of his freedom of thought and expression as guaranteed by Article 17 of the Constitution.

NA recommends Major General Ashok Sigdel for Lieutenant General’s post
The Nepali Army (NA) has nominated Ashokraj Sigdel for the vacant Lieutenant General post following a decision made during the army’s promotion committee meeting held at the military headquarters in Kathmandu. Earlier, the promotion committee formed under Lieutenant General Sitaram Khadka concluded to elevate Sigdel to the rank of Major General. Initially, Taradhwaj Pandey had been recommended for promotion following the vacancy left by Saroj Pratap Rana. However, Pandey’s resignation, owing to an age dispute, paved the way for Sigdel’s advancement.
RSP Chair Lamichhane lambasts govt’s restrictive approach
Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chairman Rabi Lamichhane voiced his concern over the government’s restrictive approach during the Durga Prasai-led movement. During a gathering in Madhes, he emphasized the importance of anyone being able to advocate for the concerns of the people. The RPP Chair highlighted that the Constitution grants the right to peacefully protest against perceived injustices.
Parliamentary committee calls for complaints against six SC justice nominees
The Parliamentary Hearing Committee summoned complaints against the six justices recommended for the Supreme Court (SC). The Judicial Council, in a meeting held on November 21, had decided to recommend the names of six justices for the Supreme Court. Subsequently, the Parliamentary Hearing Committee, in a meeting held at Singha Durbar on Friday, has summoned complaints pertaining to the recommended justices.
Tourism bounces back in Mustang
Mustang witnessed an impressive number of tourists last month. Almost 80,000 tourists visited the mountainous district during the month of Kartik. The number of domestic tourists is very high, thanks to the festive season. According to the records of the District Police Office, a total of 5,504 international and 73,879 internal tourists visited Mustang in Kartik.
