UML files lawsuit against Koshi CM Thapa’s Vote of Confidence

KATHMANDU: The ongoing dispute surrounding the government of Koshi Province has once again found its way to the Supreme Court.

Hikmat Kumar Karki, the former Chief Minister and leader of the CPN-UML Koshi parliamentary party submitted a writ to the Supreme Court through his representatives on Wednesday.

The UML has presented the argument that Chief Minister Uddhav Thapa resorted to unconstitutional measures in securing a vote of confidence on August 21.

During Monday’s provincial assembly meeting, Israeli Mansuri, a lawmaker from the Nepali Congress, presided over the session and participated in the vote of confidence, which ultimately led to Thapa securing the confidence vote. The UML has raised objections, deeming this action unconstitutional.

The Koshi Province consists of 93 lawmakers, of which 77 were present during the Monday session. Among them, 47 cast their votes in favor of Chief Minister Thapa, while 30 voted against him.

Lawmaker Mansuri chaired the meeting in the absence of Deputy Speaker Srijana Danuwar, who represented the UML but was unable to attend the session due to health issues.

In a previous instance, Thapa assumed the role of Chief Minister on July 6, with the support of then-Speaker Baburam Gautam, but this appointment was subsequently nullified by the Supreme Court on the grounds that Speaker Gautam’s signature was invalid.
