Justices Regmi and Subedi hearing case against Koshi govt formation

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court (SC) is set to commence hearings on the case challenging the formation of the Koshi state government, starting today.

The case will be heard by a joint bench comprised of Justices Kumar Regmi and Nahakul Subedi.

The petitioner, CPN-UML Parliamentary Party (PP) leader and former Chief Minister Hikmat Kumar Karki, filed a writ in the Supreme Court on July 7.

The writ was filed in response to Speaker Baburam Gautam’s signing of the claim to appoint Uddhav Thapa as Chief Minister in Koshi Province on July 6.

Karki asserts that the current government is illegal due to the “unconstitutional” signing by the Speaker, and he is demanding a mandate for the formation of the government under his leadership.

On July 12, a bench led by Justice Sapna Pradhan Malla ordered the province government not to make any decisions that could have long-term implications on the government.
