Local level distributes yaks to farmers

TAPLEJUNG: Mikwakhola Rural Municipality of Taplejung district has distributed yak calves to local farmers in a bid to promote livestock.

The rural municipality provided the yak calves to 12 farmers. Rural municipality chairman Bhakta Karki informed that farmers would be encouraged with free distribution of yak calves at a time when livestock was declining in the district.

Lack of human resources, modern lifestyle, and shortage of pasture are some reasons behind declined livestock farming.

Last year, the rural municipality had distributed 32 yak calves to the farmers. It has elated the local farmers.

The yak calves this year were bought at Rs 800 thousand.

The rural municipality team led by Chairman Karki reached farmers’ cowsheds to hand over the calves.

Chairman Karki informed that 44 households were rearing yak herds in the rural municipality now. The Papung village is popular for yak herds.
