Man arrested for coercing girls into sex trade

KATHMANDU: Police have apprehended 24-year-old Suman Tamang from Tandi Rural Municipality-6, Nuwakot, on charges of forcing girls into the sex trade.

Officers from the Human Trafficking Investigation Bureau, Babarmahal, conducted the arrest and rescued four girls after receiving information that Tamang had enticed them into engaging in sexual activities and the flesh trade at various hotels and guesthouses in the New Buspark area of Kathmandu.

According to Police Headquarters, investigations revealed that Tamang specifically targeted girls from financially disadvantaged families, initially promising them jobs as waitresses and cleaning staff at hotels and guesthouses but ultimately coercing them into the sex trade. These girls, allegedly confined for the past five years, were not permitted to leave the hotels and guesthouses.

Police are currently conducting further investigations and seeking permission from the District Court Kathmandu to extend Tamang’s custody in connection with the human trafficking case.
