Elephant tramples elederly man to death in Jhapa



JHAPA: An elderly man of Buddhashanti rural municipality-5 Kharkhola has died after being attacked by a wild elephant.

According to Meghraj Rai, head of the Division Forest Office, Jhapa, 70-year-old Bhim Bahadur Bhattarai was trampled to death by an elephant on Saturday morning.

Rai informed that Bhattarai was attacked by an elephant while he was chasing an elephant that had come to eat the ripening maize crop.

A team from Division Forest Office and police have been sent to the spot.
A herd of wild elephants has entered Nepal from India through Bahundangi, the eastern region of the district, and one dozen elephants are living in the local forest.

Locals say that a wild elephant that escaped from the herd has been attacking people.
