No need to panic over new COVID-19 variant: Health Ministry

KATHMANDU: In response to the emergence of a new variant of the coronavirus in India, the government has called upon the public to remain calm and assured them that there is no cause for panic.

Dr. Prakash Budhathoki, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Health and Population, emphasized that the situation is under control and provided valuable insights into the developments.

According to Dr. Budhathoki, the new variant detected in Kerala, India, primarily affects the respiratory system, causing an increase in respiratory-related issues in both India and China.

However, he reassured the public that the existing infrastructure, including ICUs, oxygen plants, and other facilities established during the COVID-19 pandemic, can be mobilized if necessary.

Despite the identification of a new variant, Dr. Budhathoki clarified that there are no new symptoms associated with this strain.

The symptoms observed are consistent with respiratory problems, and the spokesperson urged the public not to be unduly alarmed.

Health desks at checkpoints and international airports have been placed on high alert, and special supervision measures are in place for patients exhibiting respiratory problems.

Furthermore, the Ministry has recommended gene sequencing for individuals experiencing prolonged respiratory issues.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially confirmed the presence of the new COVID-19 variant in the state of Kerala, India.

The Health Ministry has emphasized the importance of staying informed, following guidelines, and remaining calm in the face of this new variant, asserting that the situation is being closely monitored to ensure the safety and well-being of the public.
