KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has announced a temporary suspension of garbage collection until an agreement is reached with local residents in Nuwakot.

Rabin Man Shrestha, the Director of the Environment Section at KMC, stated that ongoing discussions involve people’s representatives from concerned local levels, the Ministry of Urban Development, and other stakeholders.

“The solid waste collection in KMC will be halted for three days, and this suspension may continue for four to five days,” Shrestha explained.

He pointed out that the locals living near the landfill site have been demanding rehabilitation or a stop to garbage disposal in the area, leading to the current situation.

Nabin Manandhar, the Spokesperson at KMC, emphasized that the city authorities are actively seeking effective discussions to resolve the issues surrounding garbage disposal.

“Local residents have been obstructing the movement of garbage-carrying vehicles, citing unbearable stench emanating from the landfill site,” added Manandhar.

In response to the situation, Man Bahadur Tamang, Chairman of Ward No. 1 in Dhunibesi Municipality, asserted that they will continue to obstruct until the State addresses the demands of the local community.

Tamang insisted that the State needs to provide a clear timeline for resolving the problem.
