EC seeks clarification from political parties, university teachers

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission (EC) has sought clarification from the respective political parties, university teachers, and universities regarding the involvement of university teachers in political parties.

The EC has expressed its concerns about some political parties having allocated portfolios of their central member, general convention representative, and Maha Samiti member to the university teachers.

The Commission has acted on a complaint that political parties have provided membership to people involved in teaching in violation of Clause 14 of the Political Parties Act, 2073.

According to the complaint filed by Yubaraj Paudel, coordinator of the Nepal Samajwadi Morcha, associate professor at the Central Department of Management, the Tribhuvan University and President of the Democratic University Teachers Association of Nepal, Jagat Timilsina, associate professor at the TU Department of Chemistry and General Secretary of the Association, Rajendra Gautam, and associate professor at the Valmeeki Vidyapeeth and Vice President of the Association, Krishna Kanta Parajuli have been appointed the Nepali Congress General Convention representatives and Maha Samiti members.

Similarly, associate professor at the TU Central Department of Economics, Uma Shankar Prasad has been appointed the central member of the Janata Samajwadi Party Nepal, the EC said.
