KATHMANDU: Former King Gyanendra Shah has emphasized the pressing need for collective responsibility in preserving and fostering the invaluable garden of unity, diversity, and shared heritage in Nepal.

On the occasion of the Dashain, Tihar, and Chhat festivals, Shah conveyed, “At our essence, we are all Nepalis. It falls upon all of us to safeguard and nurture this beautiful garden of unity, diversity, and shared heritage.”

He continued, “As the great national festival of the Nepali people, Dashain now graces our homes, symbolizing the triumph of truth over falsehood. This time of reflection inspires us to cultivate the true Goddess Shakti within ourselves, both at home and abroad.”

Shah extended heartfelt auspicious wishes to all Nepalis, both within the country and across its borders.

Highlighting Nepal’s diverse topography and the array of castes, communities, and traditional cultures, he emphasized their crucial role in weaving the rich tapestry of Nepal’s collective identity.

“As proud citizens of the sovereign nation of Nepal, it is imperative that we acknowledge our potential and promise,” he stressed. “Let us uphold the values of inclusivity and respect, granting each other the freedom to practice our respective faiths.”

He further expressed, “Humility in our beliefs paves the way for personal and collective glory, and divisive attitudes and discrimination find no place in our Nepali identity. We recognize that harmony is the indispensable cornerstone of any flourishing nation.”

“Unfortunately, over the past fifteen years, many Nepali people have experienced profound disillusionment and despondency,” he lamented.

Shah underscored that one-third of Nepal’s populace resides beyond its borders, with both expatriates and those within the nation grappling with the challenges of separation, economic hardship, costly healthcare, grief, and hunger. A closer examination reveals widespread discontent and a longing for a brighter tomorrow.

“Regrettably, our interdependence has not translated into an improved economic landscape,” he pointed out.

According to the former monarch, the purported progress and changes that have been ushered in appear to have yielded little real benefit or advancement.
