KATHMANDU: Dental concerns have become prevalent among the populace, with issues ranging from toothaches to misalignments causing worry.

Every parent aspires for their child to maintain excellent oral health.

Emphasizing the importance of proper oral care, doctors caution that neglecting the mouth can lead to various dental problems, including the decay of gums.

Children, in particular, are more susceptible to dental issues, primarily attributed to dietary habits.

The rising preference for junk food, packaged snacks, and chocolates over homemade meals has contributed to health complications, especially impacting their teeth.

To shed light on the causes and treatments of toothaches, Pawan Mudbhari of Khabarhub engaged in a discussion with Dr. Bhumesh Kafle, a dentist known for his service in the remote Himalayan district, offering valuable insights into dental health.

What is the main cause of toothache?

The main cause of toothache is the neglect of oral hygiene. If the mouth, the gateway to the body, is not properly cared for, various dental issues such as toothaches and gum diseases can arise.

Is it true that worms can get into the teeth?

No, that’s a misconception. Tooth infection is incorrect terminology. The correct term is caries, which is the process of tooth decay. Initially, teeth may turn black, indicating the presence of caries.

Today’s children seem to have an increasing problem of toothache. Is this due to eating too many sweets?

Sweet foods contribute to the problem, but it’s not the sole reason. Protecting a baby’s gums from birth is crucial.

After drinking milk, cleaning the baby’s gums and, later on, encouraging self-cleaning after teething are essential practices.

Additionally, junk food can lead to cavities in children’s teeth, so offering such foods before meals can help prevent substances from sticking to their teeth.

At what age should a child be allowed to brush?

Baby care, including dental care, is important from the outset. As soon as teeth start to appear, parents should clean them with a soft brush that doesn’t cause irritation.

How much genetic influence is there in dental problems?

Toothache is not hereditary. Each person may experience different dental issues, and it depends on how well one takes care of their teeth.

By paying attention to diet and rinsing the mouth after consuming sugary products, dental problems can be avoided.

What is the treatment method for toothache?

Waiting until the tooth hurts is not advisable. In Western countries, regular dental examinations every 6 months are common.

In Nepal, the trend is to visit the hospital only when pain arises. Dental problems should be addressed proactively.

If pain occurs, visiting the hospital for cement filling can reduce it. Extracting a tooth may be necessary to prevent infection from spreading. Regular dental checkups every 6 months are recommended.

Does tooth extraction have other health effects?

Tooth extraction affects eating habits and can lead to difficulties. It also has repercussions on surrounding teeth and overall health.

Implants are not equivalent to natural teeth, so preserving natural teeth is crucial.

Finally, what suggestion do you have?

Regular dental checkups every 6 months with a government-approved dentist are essential. Make brushing a morning and evening routine.

Limiting the consumption of sugary products and junk food can significantly reduce dental problems.
