UML Chair Oli advocates against rushing Constitution amendment

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Chairman KP Oli has emphasized that it is not yet time to rush into amending the constitution.

Speaking at a program titled ‘Subas and Constitution,’ organized by CPN-UML in memory of Constituent Assembly Chairperson Subas Nembang on Tuesday, he expressed that there is currently no urgency to pursue constitution amendment solely to cater to foreign interests.

Former Prime Minister Oli stated, “A serious question arises as to whether the constitution can be appropriately amended when various inexperienced and sponsored interests are coming into play. Therefore, there is no need for hasty efforts in the matter of constitution amendment.”

He further asserted that all parties should respect the hard-earned constitution. However, he acknowledged that the constitution can be amended when necessary to make it a more practical document.

Oli also reminded that major political parties had engaged in numerous struggles and movements to achieve democracy, and the gains made through these hard-fought efforts should not be compromised in any way.
