PM Dahal ensures smooth implementation of Budhigandaki project, pledges utmost priority

GORKHA: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ reaffirmed his commitment to the timely and successful implementation of the Budhigandaki Hydropower Project, stating that there are no uncertainties surrounding its execution.

During the inauguration of the Project’s field office at Siurenitar in Gorkha, which houses the Project’s environmental impact assessment, compensation distribution, and rehabilitation unit, the Prime Minister emphasized that all necessary preparations had been made to ensure its progress.

PM Dahal informed that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) had already been prepared, followed by the establishment of a Company office. Notably, a significant portion of land acquisition had been completed, and the government’s policies and programs accorded the highest priority to the project. The Prime Minister expressed confidence that the project would advance steadily, regardless of any circumstances.

“The project is well-prepared and equipped for implementation. We are currently focused on investment management, aiming to swiftly transition it into the implementation phase. Under no circumstances shall we find any excuse to delay its progress,” stated PM Dahal.

He further directed the Energy Ministry, Nepal Electricity Authority, Budhigandaki Hydropower Company, and other relevant bodies to proactively contribute to the project’s advancement.

Highlighting the project’s significance, the Prime Minister noted that it held great potential for the development of the energy sector. As a 1,200-megawatt hydropower project, it not only contributes to the growth of Gorkha and Dhading districts but also serves as a catalyst for the entire country’s development and prosperity.

PM Dahal emphasized its multidimensional impact, citing its role in enhancing tourism, promoting fish farming, and fostering holistic development in the lower coastal area.

“The Budhigandaki Hydropower Project is the largest power generation initiative undertaken in Nepal to date. It holds importance not only in terms of electricity production but also for tourism development, fish farming, and the overall progress of various sectors,” he asserted.

The project is expected to alleviate the country’s electricity crisis during the winter season, bolster energy and tourism development, generate employment opportunities, stimulate economic activities, and contribute to national income growth.

To facilitate the construction of the reservoir-based project, the government has established the Budhigandaki Hydropower Company. On July 16, 2023, Minister for Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation, Shakti Bahadur Basnet, inaugurated the company’s headquarters office in Kathmandu.

The government had previously decided to establish the company in Asadh 2079, with an authorized capital of Rs 60 billion, symbolizing its commitment to the project’s success.
